Effective Poster Presentations: A Guide For Students
The following described format is mainly used for science assignments to provide information on an experiment. It is also applicable for posters that are done for advertising and decoration. Those posters can still be done successfully with the instruction that follows.
What You Must Consider
1. Make a sketch before you set your poster. Plan it early, and focus your attention on a few key points. Try various styles of data presentations to grab the readers’ attention. It is suggested that you focus on achieving simplicity and clarity as you lay out your poster. Posters that have too much information can sometimes ruin the reader’s interest. Use headlines and text topics.
2. Make a rough layout before you get around to doing the actual poster. With the original sketch, make it more detailed and make it the exact size that it will be on the poster. If you plan on using the computer to type text and such, print it it out and use it on your poster. While looking at the poster, ask yourself questions like: Is the text too small? Is the color you used effective?
3. Now, your artwork is complete. Recheck everything to ensure that all your information is in the right spot and is able to be seen from at least five feet away. Make sure that the message you are trying to convey is clear and understandable without any oral explanations.
4. Ensure that your poster is well balanced. Do the number of illustrations match the text? Does the coloring seem to be neatly done and not out-of-place? Text should be as concise as possible, without using abbreviations.
5. Try not to overload your poster with information and colors. The simpler your poster is, the better. Try to keep your poster at a point where it does not distract the reader to focus on something other than the message you are trying to send out.
Remember that making a successful poster is not hard as long as you plan it out correctly and have the patience to check it over. Balance it, and just hope that it is pleasing to the eye.
